You may have noticed that the blond hair turns green after a swim session, which is most likely due to chlorine in the pool water. Often tap water in older buildings with a lot of copper content may also turn your hair green. Chlorine and Copper are two chemicals that are present in large quantities in pool water. These chemicals react to form a thin layer that sticks to the other layer of hair strands. This layer can cause hair color to turn green.
How to Avoid and Fix Green Hair From Chlorine
We understand this is an inconvenience, even while knowing it isn’t permanent. The green color may limit your social activities or what you plan to do. Thus there are a few tips you can use to avoid getting a coat of green on your hair.
#1 pre-swim conditioner
Applying a leave-in conditioner before you swim can protect your hair from chemicals forming the green layer on your hair.
#2 Soaking hair before swimming
Dry hair acts like a magnet for the chemicals, thus soaking your hair in water before swimming. If you begin with wet hair, chlorine and Copper won’t hang onto your hair, and therefore your hair will not turn green.
#3 Post swim hair wash
It is essential to wash your hair properly with shampoo and conditioner post-swimming. This will help wash off any chemicals sticking to your hair.
#4 Vegetable Juice
V8/Tomato Juice – Tomato and other leafy vegetable juices have chemicals that help provide natural nutrients to the hair. Post swimming coat your hair with tomato juice and let it sit for a few minutes. After that, wash as usual.
#5 Ketchup
Similar process as Step #4 above. Ketchup also provides the essential nutrients of tomato juice and may be easier to apply.
#6 Aspirin
Make a syrup of aspirin by squashing few tablets in a little bit of water. You can use a brush to apply this syrup to your hair and let them sit for 15-30 minutes. Rinse it out with freshwater, and then shampoo and condition as usual.
#7 Sodium bicarbonate
Make a baking soda paste by mixing baking soda with water. Gently massage the paste into the green hair, let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then wash out clean water. You may have to repeat this process depending on the green color’s intensity that needs to be removed.
#8 Lemon juice
Saturate your hair with lemon juice and let it sit for few minutes before shampooing and conditioning as usual.
#9 Lemon Kool-Aid
It is interesting to know that Lemon Kool-Aid can also help eliminate the green color. Apply Kool-Aid and water mix to the green area in hair. Let it sit for a few minutes and then shampoo and condition as you would normally.
